This seminar series explores the classical guru-disciple relationship based on India’s oldest spiritual texts and examines its relevance for today’s seekers. The focus is on the question of what distinguishes a guru from an ordinary teacher and what prerequisites are necessary on the part of the disciple for genuine transformation to take place.
A special focus is placed on developing discernment: How can one recognize an authentic teacher, and which warning signs should be taken seriously? At the same time, the role of the “inner teacher” is explored—that dimension of awareness which can provide guidance independently of external authorities.
The series demonstrates how spiritual instruction works, why certain words possess transformative power, and under what conditions teaching truly “resonates.” Likewise, the tension between devotion, service, and potential dependency is examined in a nuanced way.
Furthermore, the significance of tradition and transmission (Paramparā) is explained, and the handling of doubt, disappointment, and development within teacher-student relationships is reflected upon. Finally, the perspective expands to include life itself as a teacher and the ability to embody the insights gained independently.
The seminar is led by Chandra, who has decades of practice in the Sivananda tradition as well as a background in academic teaching of Eastern religions.
